Polovragi Cave is one of the most accessible and spectacular karst objectives in Oltenia, located at the entrance to the Olteț Gorges, between Polovragi and Baia de Fier. Visiting it is easy, guided, and suitable for all ages, and the surrounding area offers numerous natural and cultural attractions.
How to get there
By car: access is very simple, on national road DN67 (Horezu – Baia de Fier). From the center of Polovragi commune, the sign to the gorges leads you directly on an asphalted road to the entrance of the Olteț Gorges. From there, a path of approximately 300 meters ascends to the cave. Approximate distances: – Târgu Jiu – ~50 km – Râmnicu Vâlcea – ~60 km – Sibiu – ~95 km – Craiova – ~150 km Parking is available near the monastery and the entrance to the gorges.
By public transport: there are minibuses on the Râmnicu Vâlcea – Horezu – Târgu Jiu route, which stop in Polovragi. From there, you can reach the cave on foot (approx. 20–25 minutes). Note: public transport does not reach the entrance to the cave.
When to go
Recommended season: May – October, when the road through the Olteț Gorges is easy, the weather is pleasant, and the river's low flow allows for comfortable access. For tranquility and ideal temperatures: September – early October, with fewer tourists, good light for photos, and stable weather. In winter, the cave is open, but the path through the gorges can be slippery. The interior temperature remains constant, 8–9°C.
What you will see in the cave
Polovragi Cave is arranged for tourists for a distance of approximately 800 meters, with lighting and railings. Main attractions include: – Spectacular karst formations: stalactites, stalagmites, columns, wall flows – White Hall – areas where calcite reflects light – Divine Hall – appreciated for its symmetry and spaciousness – Zamolxe's Throne – a natural formation that has become a symbol of the cave The temperature is constant, around 8–9°C, humidity is high, and the floor can be slightly wet.
Fauna: the cave hosts several species of bats, including the horseshoe bat, and small organisms adapted to the subterranean environment. The visit does not affect the fauna, as the tourist area is well delineated.
